Safe behind the bricks and fences of home
He grew; slow stars burst from those hard-backed shells -
Bedtime books on times when dinosaurs roamed
Until tiny, touchable now cast spells.
He read lists like a rosary, supplies
Kept under glass like his school work and play
While children turned their heads - big hunter eyes
Like the mantis to seek their easy prey.
A centipede of nightmares duly hatched
From wriggling gifts. Laughed at and liquefied
He cracked open cases, locusts despatched
To eat the scene, childish things cast aside.
His kiss bears the flight of each summer wing;
Yet at night he still hears the crickets sing.
